As believers in Christ, we are profoundly grateful for the abundant blessings we experience in life. There are moments when everything seems to fall into place, until one day, our lives take an unexpected turn. Let me introduce you to our dear sister, Shirley Santos. She comes from a family blessed with financial stability, and she enjoys the presence of her accomplished children and a loving husband. However, little did she know that a silent threat was gradually developing within her body—free radicals were beginning to form.
During the final quarter of the pandemic, she experienced an unexpected flow in her cervix. Recognizing the urgency, they decided to seek medical attention the following morning at the Medical City.
After undergoing a series of tests, including a Pap Smear, her OB-Gynecologist expressed concern about the possibility of cancerous cells. Consequently, she was referred to an Oncologist. It was a heavy blow to her heart when the diagnosis confirmed stage 3B cervical cancer.
Fortunately, she was blessed with financial support that enabled her to receive thorough examinations and immediate treatment. Nonetheless, her journey ahead remained a formidable battle, encompassing various aspects of her life.
THE STRUGGLES
In addition to enduring the excruciating pain, she was overwhelmed with fear and apprehension about what lay ahead. The waiting period for test results was agonizing, as she went from one examination to another, all while navigating the challenging circumstances of the pandemic. With COVID-19 cases reaching their highest peak during that time, she faced the additional threat of potential exposure to the virus, further intensifying her concerns. It was really tough, pushing her to the point where she uttered these heartfelt words, “Lord, I am ready.”
The initial two months of her journey proved to be the most daunting for her. During this period, she had to commit to daily check-ups and radiation therapy sessions, spanning 28 days. Additionally, she underwent chemotherapy every Sunday. Fortunately, she did not experience hair loss (alopecia), but the fear and anxiety of entering those treatment machines made it difficult for her to breathe.
THE RESTORATION
During times like these, vulnerability can seep into our hearts. However, God has His own unique way of reminding us to continue placing our trust in Him. Although it would have been easier for her to give up, she chose to recall the countless miracles Christ performed in the Bible. At that moment, she realized that God is sovereign and in control of every situation. Imagining a conversation with God, she could almost hear the question, “What is it that you desire?” With unwavering faith, she replied, “Lord, I yearn for healing. Please extend my life, as I still have a strong desire to care for my husband, support my children—especially the youngest—and witness the growth of my grandchildren.” True to His promise, Jesus granted her healing, restoring her health.
After undergoing six months of continuous treatment, a ray of hope emerged as they witnessed a positive prognosis for her condition. Following two PET scans, the most recent being in the first quarter of this year, Dr. Geminelle Co-Reyes declared her cancer-free. The miraculous healing extended beyond her own recovery and also encompassed her grandson Caleb, who was healed from Neuroblastoma. All of this can be attributed to the abundant grace that was bestowed upon them.
TRANSFORMATION
Her faith healed her! Hallelujah! Each day, she fervently expressed her gratitude to God, recognizing His divine intervention in her life. She also desired to extend her heartfelt appreciation to The Feast Antipolo, especially the couples and intercessory ministries. In her moments of vulnerability, she found solace and true friendship, freely sharing her pain. The genuine love and care she experienced while others prayed for her healing and restoration left an indelible impact on her journey.
Participating in fellowships at The Feast Antipolo had a profound impact on her faith and perspective on life. Not only did it strengthen her trust in God, but it also transformed her into a more friendly and trustworthy individual. Through the teachings and community support, her character underwent positive development, resulting in personal growth and a deeper connection with others.
HER FAVORITE VERSE
Through her battle, she acquired valuable lessons that prompted her to prioritize self-care. This transformative experience cultivated within her a deeper sense of compassion for others, leading her to genuinely care for and pray for them. As an expression of gratitude, she engaged in fundraising efforts, even utilizing social media platforms like Facebook on her previous birthday. She shared her life journey as a living testimony of God’s faithfulness, suggesting herbal remedy and providing encouragement. In her newfound wisdom, she advises everyone to prioritize self-care. She especially urges the youth to adopt healthier lifestyles, emphasizing that as they age, they will undergo changes that necessitate a proactive approach to maintaining well-being.
One of her favorite scriptures is, Proverbs 3:5-6, beautifully encapsulates her journey: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Through her life’s testimony, she has exemplified the essence of this verse by wholeheartedly trusting in the Lord. Her unwavering faith and surrender to God’s guidance have led her on a path of healing, restoration, and transformation. She serves as a living testament to the power of complete trust in the Lord, showcasing the fulfillment of His promises in her life.
